Lovingly developed over the past 75 years, this lush botanical haven offers a manicured calm that stands in beautiful contrast to the raw wilderness just beyond the fence. Guests are invited to wander the paths or simply find a quiet corner to relax at their own leisure.

Tannie Gerda's Garden
Our botanical gardens story starts over 75 years ago when Oom Frikkie (Oom: Afrikaans word for uncle, a term of respect) met Tannie Gerda (Tannie: Afrikaans word for aunt, a term of respect). He didn’t promise her the world, but he did promise her the garden of her dreams if she moved to Madikwe with him and so the story of our gardens was born.
Tannie Gerda used the gardens as a way of commemorating her loved ones and special memories. She cultivated the entire garden herself and cared for it out of a deep love.

Many of the staff have been working at Madikwe Hillhouse Lodge for over 20 years and had the privilege of working alongside Tannie Gerda in her beloved garden.
